A Flight with Purpose: Why Flying for SkyHope Changes Lives — Including Mine
A Flight with Purpose: Why Flying for SkyHope Changes Lives — Including Mine
There are many reasons I chose aviation. The freedom, the precision, the responsibility. But every once in a while, a flight reminds you that aviation is more than skill and machines—it’s about people, purpose, and impact.
My recent mission flying for SkyHope Patient Airlift Service from Hollywood to Jacksonville was one of those unforgettable experiences.
A Passenger Who Leaves a Lasting Impact
On board that day was Kyle Rising Moore, a man currently battling Stage 4 Colo-rectoral Cancer. But if you spent even a few minutes with Kyle, you wouldn’t define him by his illness, you’d define him by his strength, his energy, and his unwavering positivity.
From the moment we met, Kyle carried himself not as a patient, but as a fighter, and more than that, as an advocate.
During our flight, he shared the story of his journey over the past few years. The challenges. The uncertainty. The fight. And yet, what stood out most wasn’t the hardship, it was his mindset.
Kyle speaks about his disease openly, not with fear, but with purpose.
Turning Pain into Purpose
Kyle has taken his diagnosis and transformed it into a mission.
He has become a true crusader for awareness, especially when it comes to the importance of colonoscopies. His message is simple, powerful, and life-saving: early detection matters.
He doesn’t just talk about it—he lives it. Every conversation, every interaction, every person he meets becomes an opportunity to educate and inspire.
He is also a proud ambassador for both SkyHope Patient Airlift Service and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, helping bring awareness to the incredible work being done and the resources available to patients in need.
Inspiration at 9,000 Feet
As pilots, we are trained to focus on systems, weather, airspace, and safety. But on flights like this, something else takes center stage, human connection.
Cruising northbound across Florida, listening to Kyle speak, I found myself deeply inspired.
Here is a man facing one of life’s toughest battles, yet he radiates positivity, motivation, and gratitude. He’s not just fighting for himself—he’s fighting to help others.
And that kind of energy is contagious.
It reminds you to appreciate the small things.
It reminds you to stay positive, even when life gets difficult.
It reminds you why service matters.
Why I Fly for SkyHope
Flying for SkyHope Patient Airlift Service is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in aviation.
These flights are not about hours logged or destinations reached, they’re about making a difference.
They’re about:
- Giving patients access to critical medical care
- Reducing the burden of long-distance travel
- Providing comfort during uncertain times
- And sometimes, simply being there to listen
But what I’ve learned is this:
While we help transport patients physically… they often uplift us emotionally.
A Flight I’ll Never Forget
My flight with Kyle Rising Moore is one I’ll carry with me for a long time.
Not because of the route.
Not because of the aircraft.
But because of the person sitting beside me.
Kyle is an inspiration—not just to those battling cancer, but to everyone he meets. His strength, his optimism, and his willingness to turn adversity into advocacy is something rare.
And for me, as a pilot, being part of that journey—even for a couple of hours—was an absolute privilege.
Final Thoughts
Moments like this are a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
Aviation gives us the ability to go anywhere, but purpose gives those journeys meaning.
And thanks to incredible individuals like Kyle, I’m reminded that sometimes the most important part of the flight isn’t where you’re going…
It’s who you’re flying with.
